Disney Adventure World at Disneyland Paris has a character entirely its own — one that touches visitors the moment they arrive: elegant, romantic, and deeply rooted in nature. That atmosphere is no accident. It grows from one of the most beautiful artistic movements in European history. Welcome to the world of Art Nouveau.
Back to the Belle Époque
With Adventure Way, the charming promenade at the heart of Disney Adventure World, Walt Disney Imagineering Paris has created far more than a simple extension. Inspired by the great European pleasure gardens of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, this area embraces an Art Nouveau aesthetic: romantic, elegant, and intimately connected with the natural world.
“Returning to the inspiration behind those early twentieth-century parks is, in a way, returning to the very essence of what makes a Disney park what it is,” explains Bowie Faas, Principal Creative Producer at Walt Disney Imagineering Paris. Where Walt Disney Studios Park always carried an urban, contemporary identity, Adventure Way makes a deliberate choice for something timeless, elegant, and nostalgic — designed to give guests an immediate sense of recognition and wonder.
The legacy of Tivoli Gardens
One of the most important sources of inspiration for Adventure Way is Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, one of the oldest amusement parks in the world, which opened in 1843. Its founder, Georg Carstensen, dreamed of a destination that brought together art, culture, and nature — an ideal that resonates deeply with the vision behind Disney Adventure World.
That Danish influence is most clearly visible in the lighting. Throughout Adventure Way, trees and buildings are adorned with nearly 10,000 small bulbs, affectionately nicknamed “popcorn lights” by the Imagineers. This abundance of twinkling light recalls the glittering façades, illuminated arches, and hanging garlands of the great European pleasure gardens. It is no coincidence that Tivoli Gardens holds such a special place in Disney history: Walt Disney himself was profoundly moved by a visit there in 1951 during a European tour — a visit that would directly influence the creation of Disneyland.
Architecture that tells a story
From the moment guests step onto Adventure Way, the tone is set. Two elegant gazebos frame the main promenade and immerse visitors immediately in a Belle Époque atmosphere. “They invite guests to discover a space full of refinement and wonder,” says Andy Martin, Creative Lead. “Every detail — from the varied ornamental elements and handcrafted stained-glass windows to the harmonious blend of colours and materials — has been carefully considered.”
The choice of Art Nouveau goes well beyond aesthetics. Represented by figures such as Alphonse Mucha in the graphic arts and Jules Lavirotte in architecture, the movement celebrates nature above all else: through organic lines, stylised botanical motifs, and a constant pursuit of harmony between people and their surroundings. On Adventure Way, that philosophy comes to life in the lush planting that guides guests along the promenade.
One style, many Disney stories
On Adventure Way, Art Nouveau serves as a unifying thread that brings together a variety of Disney and Pixar worlds into a beautifully coherent whole. From Peter Pan to Mary Poppins, from Rapunzel to Up — every story finds its place along this poetic promenade.
“Adventure Way tells no single story,” explains Bowie Faas. “It is a cohesive architectural composite — a canvas on which multiple Disney and Pixar stories exist naturally side by side. Through the Art Nouveau style, those stories are woven together within a poetic setting.”
The Regal View Restaurant: a showcase of the Belle Époque
One of the most spectacular examples of Art Nouveau influence can be found in The Regal View Restaurant & Lounge. The interior immediately evokes the atmosphere of iconic Parisian Belle Époque establishments such as Le Train Bleu at Gare de Lyon and La Fermette Marbeuf. At the heart of the restaurant hangs an impressive mural by Imagineer Alfred Lee, created in collaboration with Disney and Pixar artists, depicting Disney Princesses — from Snow White to Raya — in costumes and poses designed exclusively for this work.
A new identity for Disney Adventure World
With Adventure Way, Disney Adventure World embraces a boldly new identity, moving well beyond the purely cinematic aesthetic of the former Walt Disney Studios Park. The use of Art Nouveau anchors the park in a rich European heritage whilst creating a warm, romantic, and inviting universe — a place that rewards discovery, no matter how many times you visit.
