Disneyland Paris has revealed how the stunning castle at World of Frozen came to life — and the details are truly fascinating.
The Arendelle Castle in Disney Adventure World looks as though it stepped straight out of the Frozen films. But behind that magical façade lies a remarkable feat of craftsmanship. Disneyland Paris worked alongside British company UK Loco Ltd — a specialist theming and engineering firm based in Cropthorne, England — who have been a trusted partner of the park for over twenty years.
Norwegian Heritage as a Source of Inspiration
The castle’s design is far from arbitrary fantasy. The architecture blends the sturdy foundations of a medieval fortress with rooflines inspired by Norwegian stave churches — known as stavkirkes. A well-known example is the 12th-century Borgund Church. These historical references give Arendelle its authentic, fairytale character that still feels rooted in real culture.
Translating those influences into a theme park setting demands enormous precision: layered roof forms, refined silhouettes, and surface finishes that look wonderful from multiple angles, at varying distances, and in ever-changing light.
From 3D Model to Castle
The project began digitally. UK Loco Ltd created detailed 3D models of the castle, its walls, and its towers. This allowed the Walt Disney Imagineering Paris teams to assess the design from every angle and refine both the creative and structural details — before a single bolt had been turned.
The steel construction followed: certified steel fabrication for the internal load-bearing skeleton. Once the foundations were in place, work on the façade began. A full-scale mock-up of a castle section was built and scenically painted, enabling Walt Disney Imagineering Paris to evaluate materials and finishes in person — before full production got underway.
Almost 2,000 Decorative Roof Panels
The finished result is the product of several specialist disciplines:
- Aluminium fabrication for the spires and roof components
- Woodworking and pattern-making for the detailed wall structures
- Almost 2,000 decorative roof panels across roof and wall surfaces
- Scenic paintwork, including references to the Scandinavian rosemaling technique
- Lighting design that enhances the overall look and feel
That rosemaling technique — traditional Norwegian decorative floral painting — is a subtle yet powerful detail that gives the castle an extra layer of authenticity that true enthusiasts will instantly recognise.
Forced Perspective for Maximum Magic
The castle has been deliberately designed as the visual centrepiece of World of Frozen. Forced perspective — a classic technique that makes buildings appear taller than they actually are — enhances the visual storytelling as guests make their way through the land. The castle invites visitors to draw closer for a royal encounter with Elsa and Anna.
20 Years of Partnership
This project also marks a special milestone: more than 20 years of collaboration between UK Loco Ltd and Disneyland Paris. Over that time, they have contributed to attractions including The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Toy Story Playland, Crush’s Coaster, Ratatouille: L’Aventure Totalement Toquée de Rémy, and the Quinjet at Avengers Campus.
“It is a true source of pride for everyone at UK Loco to have been a trusted partner of Disneyland Paris for so long. Contributing to Disney Adventure World feels especially meaningful as we celebrate our 20-year collaboration with Walt Disney Imagineering Paris.”
